Looking for some sweet children’s books with a message about helping animals? Nobody’s Cats is the story of one little kitty who was the first of many helped out of the cold, based on the work of Lakes Animal Friendship Society in Burns Lake, B.C. The lovely story is now available in French and Spanish, and new animal welfare books have been added. The true story that inspired Nobody’s Cats is included, with photos of Vivienne and Catrina, who first noticed cats in need. The girls worked with the society and their school, raising awareness and the first $100 toward spaying/neutering the cats. Further, they “volunteered to help by feeding the cats and overseeing the care of the colony.” By the 2015 publication date, over 400 cats were helped, “bringing the population under control in colonies where the situation seemed hopeless. Now the caregivers and the cats are much happier.”
A second children’s book was published the following year, now also available in French and Spanish. Out of the Cold is the heartwarming tale of how a northern community came together to build shelters for cats and dogs living outdoors. Although focused on a dog, a tabby cat appears occasionally and has a grand finale, enjoying the house no longer needed by the dog. The organization’s true story is again included, with photos of some of the volunteers and the lovely new shelters. At first, they struggled with how best to help these outdoor dogs and cats, settling on an ingenious design they call the Hofer House. “In our cold northern climate where temperatures can drop to forty below zero in the winter, proper shelter can mean the difference between life and death.” The society’s website offers step-by-step plans of the economical, attractive shelters made with a single sheet of plywood. Secondary school teacher, Dirk Hofer, reworked an initial plan “to make it durable and weatherproof, with insulation and a flap to keep the wind out.” Carpentry classes at the College of New Caledonia “took the project one step further by creating ‘flat packs’ ... [that] can be easily transported and assembled with just a screwdriver.” Elementary school children painted the shelters in bright colours using donated paint. Sewing students at another remote community, Granisle, provided pet bedding and blankets sewn with donated fabric. By 2016 when Out of the Cold was published, over 250 shelters had been built or refurbished, 200 of them Hofer Houses. They were built by “young children to senior citizens, by aspiring carpenters and special needs students. There are hundreds of happy house recipients in our community of the Lakes District and across rural northwestern British Columbia.” The concept had spread to communities in Alberta, Ontario and even Arkansas. The society hopes to spread the word so that even more can benefit. Both books may be purchased directly from the organization's website.
