In deepest winter, a groundbreaking rescue is underway. Five groups from two provinces have reached out to save abandoned cats on Little Bay Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador. The community will soon shut down except for one couple living off the grid. As the animal rescue wasn’t entirely supported by the provincial government, I emailed their chief veterinarian, an email that was soon shared by many others. Read on for the text. Dear Dr. Rogers, I am writing to support the rescue of abandoned domestic cats on Little Bay Islands.
I understand that you are seeking a veterinarian who is prepared to euthanize the feral cats remaining at this location. This view is predicated on the belief that it is better to be put to death than continue living as a feral cat. Unfortunately a minority of groups continue to advocate this approach, for groundless reasons. Best practices for feral cat population management include trap-neuter-return (TNR). This means spaying and neutering to prevent further population increase, and treating for medical issues. Tame cats are adopted to homes, while kittens and fearful cats are socialized before adoption. Feral cats, who grew up without human contact, can usually be returned to their original location with ongoing supervised care and feeding, but if the location is unsafe, they are relocated as working cats to barn homes, or if available, to live out their lives in sanctuaries. Little Bay Islands is not considered a safe location for the numbers of cats believed to remain, as the settlement is emptying except for one family living off the grid; as a result, relocation is the only humane option to consider for remaining feral cats. Since 2014, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association has supported TNR, stating that "well-managed trap, neuter, and return (TNR) programs are an important strategy in the management of feral and abandoned free-roaming cats." Experience of those working in the field and the evidence of much research has shown that TNR is indeed the only successful strategy to manage feral cat populations. In addition, the benefit to the welfare of cats in need, and the well-being of humans involved, means that it is also the only compassionate approach. People love cats, and certainly don't want to see them suffer. They also don't want to see them put to death unnecessarily (a topic which has also been researched). Please choose the compassionate approach and support those who have come from afar to help rescue these abandoned felines. - Irene Plett More information about the rescue mission: Little Bay Island Cat Rescue Mission Facebook group Blog by Tuxedo Party of Canada Cat Welfare Society Topics: animal rescue, cat rescue, community cats, feral cats, TNR, Little Bay Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador

Very well written. I hope those in charge of veterinary practice in Newfoundland and Labrador encourage the politicians to fund and follow a well planned TNR program.

Thank you! A great way to go forward, finding vets who support TNR and would be willing to speak up on behalf of the abandoned animals. I hope this is the beginning of change for NL.

TNR works. As well Some Feral Cats can be socialized. I have 8 and my son has 6. They are more affectionate than persay social cats. Government Failed to seek the opinion of us, people who have been working with ferals for years. It was a horrific decision to euthanize as government stated they would do as an answer. Those cats are Healthy and can be socialized or placed. Death is not the answer for healthy animals.

Well said. Thank you for your work with feral cats! There is something very special when you can share affection with one who was fearful or stand-offish earlier. Perhaps it makes it a more powerful connection when you see transformation as a result of your patience and care. Best wishes with your ongoing work and happy holidays!
