Meet Crusher in this guest blog post by Eric For a few years, my almost daily walk by the Fraser River took me past a farm, where I would often see the proprietor sitting outside the little store they ran there. Wearing smudged jeans over rubber boots, the farmer would usually grunt in response to my greeting. I also saw a lot of cats. One day I asked if I could give them treats. The farmer agreed. The cats quickly became accustomed to their treats. I was often greeted by seven or eight of them walking towards me as I approached, but only one would allow me to touch him. This was an orange tabby they called Orange Crush, who naturally became my favourite. I asked where he slept at night. “I don’t know” was the response.
On one freezing morning I saw the tabby trying to drink from a frozen water bucket. He would on occasion cough when I was there. The farmer said, “We’ll give him another shot.” What? I became concerned for his welfare. I called Anne, a volunteer with VOKRA. I’ll never forget what she said: “We need to rescue this guy.” She told me to ask if I could buy him, and if so, Anne would have VOKRA attend to his health issues. The farmer agreed that I could take him for no charge, “because you obviously like him.” So off to VOKRA he went. Rescuers get to name the cat, so I called him Crusher. VOKRA treated him for his lung infection, got him neutered, and otherwise got him healthy. I told Anne that I wanted Crusher, even though I already had Mocha, my eleven-year-old rescue from CARES cat shelter. Two months after I picked him up at the farm, Crusher arrived as a foster. As soon as possible I submitted my foster failure papers. Anne arrived with Marlene, another VOKRA volunteer, for the adoption ceremony on Feb. 1, 2016. After I signed the paperwork, they suggested that I move Crusher, in his crate, out of his living quarters in the spare bedroom to the dining room. Then, “let’s let him out.” He’s been out ever since. Aggravating Mocha at times. Being a rascal and making me laugh most days. I feel blessed to have these two kids in my home. Eric
