Kringle with Pea Horsley's Heart to Heart Wouldn’t you want to hear your pet talk in your own language? According to intuitive animal communicators, it's possible! I loved Pea Horsley’s account of attending a workshop and discovering that animal communication was her calling, in her book Heart to Heart. Last year, a holistic healer connected with my kitty Kringle, and it was a moving experience. I’m hoping to develop the skill myself; Pea Horsley says that anyone can. What is animal communication? In this context, it’s an intuitive connection where the listener tunes in to what an animal is expressing. Information may be conveyed in words, even complete sentences, in the listener’s language. Sometimes images or videos are shared. Sensations and emotions may be experienced in the listener’s body, like when discussing health conditions. The communication is also two-way. Not only are questions answered and insightful information provided, but the animal can also receive helpful suggestions and act on them. Unbelievable? It's certainly different than how most of us have been taught to see the world. In Heart to Heart, we hear many stories where families recognize unique features of their pet that wouldn't have been known to the author. Helpful information is then shared that makes life better for the animal and for the family. One story was confirmed in a 2008 news piece in The Guardian: Marmite, a dog discovered down a disused canal overgrown with brambles. Marmite’s story was one of many amazing accounts of tracking lost animals. The author connected with the animal using a photo, then asked for information about their location and how they got there. Everything else had been tried with Marmite, including dog trackers and thermal imaging cameras. The information received from the dog himself led to the discovery of a disused concrete canal, where a fire crew lowered Marmite's basket for him to climb onto. How marvellous to learn about another tool to help find lost pets! We are cautioned that even though we may learn to communicate with animals doesn’t mean that we can control them. They are “masters in their own right.” Texas the cat refused to disclose where he was wandering, sharing only that he was “on important cat business.” The author found that cats “often say what they want you to hear. They sometimes withhold the truth altogether.” Cheeky kitties! But it was a cat who shared some of the most profound wisdom. Stewart encouraged his family not to obsess about his own health issues, but to look inward: “Look at yourselves. You are letting your life slip by. Where is your heart? What is important to you? Why are you not living life through your heart? I know you are not happy. I feel your sadness, your indecision and your confusion. Ask not, ‘What should I be doing?’ Ask, ‘What will make me happy?’” He went on to deliver the most stunning advice for mindfulness, positivity, and following one’s heart. Calm was also important. When someone is stressed about a lost animal, their pet can tap into that stress. This idea resonated with me. I recalled when B.J. disappeared one night when I lost track of time on Facebook. It was only after I calmed while looking up at the moon and the stars that I saw his fluffy white paws bounding in my direction. I thought back to the time when a holistic healer, Diana, helped me with Kringle last year. She told me she was learning about animal communication and asked if I would be willing for her to try it with Kringle. I agreed. Some of her observations were very moving. About his anxiety, she said that he felt fear for the safety of his life. He couldn’t trust others, even other cats, as they might harm him; he had to shrink away and hide. He had put his trust in others, but they’d let him down. “That was when my brother left me and I had to fend for myself. I realize he didn’t have a choice.” When Kringle was abandoned after over ten years in the same home, he was with a younger cat, PJammies. The two cats from the same home were found together, but were separated to the first available, different foster homes. They never saw one another again. It made sense that Kringle felt his protector had abandoned him. I wondered what else he may have endured with the family that tossed both cats outdoors when their house was sold. I considered whether seeing PJammies again might help Kringle, but his original rescuer, Maria, was not in favour. Too much time had passed and a reunion could be stressful. PJammies would also carry the scent of his new adopted family and their new kitten. It was reassuring to hear how Kringle felt about being with me: “I am content to be by myself and Irene, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.” I’ve always had an affinity for animals, and now I’m tuning in to them even more. I want to learn more. I want to help Kringle finally get over his trauma. Sadly, PJammies recently passed away. I told Kringle that PJammies is protecting him once again, and he doesn't need to be fearful anymore. The other question I have is the best way to remove the mats that develop in Kringle's fur that he finds difficult to groom. Could he give me permission for the indignities that are needed? Is there a preferred method that he would allow? It would be marvellous to have a clear way forward on this issue. I signed up for the author’s newsletter and introductory guide. She’s written a second book, The Animal Communicator’s Guide Through Life, Loss and Love. Expected in September is her third, a how-to guide, Animal Communication Made Easy. I also requested a library copy of a book that she endorsed, Amelia Kinkade’s Straight from the Horse’s Mouth: How To Talk To Animals and Get Answers. Let the learning begin! Have you had a surprising experience of tuning in to your cat by intuition? You won't be the only one!
